The Legend of the High-Seat Pillars

The Symbolism

Norse tradition held that the high-seat pillars were sacred and a means of connecting with the land spirits.

  • Ingólfur Arnarson: The legend states that after arriving in Iceland, he threw his high-seat pillars overboard, intending to settle where they washed ashore. He found them in Reykjavik, which became the first permanent Norse settlement. 
  • Flóki Vilgerðarson: Another prominent figure, Flóki, also used his pillars to find a place to settle, with the currents guiding them to the Westfjords. 

Significance

  • Spiritual Connection: The use of the pillars reflects a strong belief in fate and divine guidance within Norse culture. 
  • Foundation Story: The legend blends mystical beliefs with the tangible act of settlement, providing a spiritual anchor for Iceland’s early history. 
  • Folklore and Sagas: While often seen as folklore, the tale is deeply embedded in Icelandic tradition and the Old Norse sagas, shaping the national narrative of the land’s discovery and settlement.

    I have a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) in Advertising Design/Marketing from Texas Woman's University, where I learned a variety of art forms and studied the history of human creative expression. I also learned principals of marketing and advertising, which has helped me craft more impactful works.

    My 35 year creative career in digital media has given me hands-on experience with a variety tools and techniques, and a keen eye for story.

    I'm embracing my "golden years" by following my bliss and helping others do the same.
